As a member of the Hand Bookbinders of California (HBC), I was thrilled to arrange for our group to receive a retired Rainbow Flag from the Castro Merchants Association of San Francisco. Those who care for this important cultural symbol decided to bestow retired flags upon artists who could give the fabric a new life, and I knew our members would be perfect for the task. With this goal in mind, I organized the distribution of the flag, sectioning the historic fabric for our members to transform into handmade books. It has been a joy to shepherd this unusual and meaningful project through to HBC 53 Exhibition
Prismatic is my contribution to the exhibition. The text was laser-and hand-cut from the Pride Flag fabric, backed with Lokta paper with Pentland goat leather covers. The material-slippery, synthetic, and resistant-offered unexpected challenges that shaped the process as much as the outcome.
Each page explores one of the six colors of the modern Pride flag-Life, Healing, Sunlight, Nature, Serenity, and Spirit-paired with its meaning and rendered in multiple languages to reflect the global, intersectional nature of queer identity.
The book carries a quiet resilience-where cloth becomes language, and symbol becomes story.
